CHAPTER BUSINESS/DINNER/EDUCATION MEETING. Heavy On Metals. Two outstanding specialists join us for a panel discussion of the sheet metal trade and its all-too-often overlooked role in weather protection. What are the best (and worst) materials and methods for flashings at thresholds, windows, chimneys, and decks? What are the advantages and drawbacks of galvanized steel, copper, stainless steel, and bonderized metal? What are the best choices for gutters? Why does metal work so often fall between the cracks in construction? What is -- or should be -- the role of architects in specifying flashings? Our presenters: Bruce Sturgeon, third-generation expert fabricator, operates from the family owned Crown Heating in Berkeley, a premier fabricator serving roofers and other contractors since 1954; and Chris Mast, an independent sheet metal specialist with 23 years of experience in architectural metals, serving the East Bay and Marin from his base in El Cerrito. If you have photos of flashing conditions you would like to have discussed, email them to Paul Rude, paul@summerinspect.com

CHAPTER BUSINESS/DINNER/EDUCATION MEETING. Buried Fuel Tanks: Reconnaisance and Removal. George Wilson of L+W Environmental, a Bay Area pioneer in tank removal, fills us in on the clues that a buried fuel tank may be present on properties we inspect, regulations governing removal and remediation, and the potential impact on clients and homeowners. After starting out with his father, a general contractor who built gas stations and installed tanks, George started removing them in the 1980s, before most of the current regulations were adopted. He has done it all, including pulling out buried rail cars and working on sites with archaeologists. Do not miss this authoritative presentation and some great stories!
